The Decemberists | News 05.12.09

Point of Order:
• A Short Fazed Hovel Tour comes to Pittsburgh!
• A live "After the Bombs" can be found on Causes 2 benefit album
• The Decemberists to appear on The Tonight Show Thursday night, and then...
• ...Morning Becomes Eclectic this Friday morning

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

This e-missive is being penned as The Decemberists wrap up rehearsals in Portland for A Short Fazed Hovel Tour, beginning next week in Los Angeles!

This week's New Show Award goes to The Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh. The Decemberists will be playing there with The Heartless Bastards on Friday, August 14th. A presale is currently underway at http://decemberists.tickets.musictoday.com and tickets go on sale to the public this Friday, May 15 at 10 am at http://pgharts.org.

The Decemberists have donated a song - "After the Bombs" from a performance at Chicago's Vic Theatre in the fall of 2007 - to the Causes 2 benefit album. 100% of the profits from the album go to Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontiéres and Oxfam America. The album also includes rare and exclusive songs from some great artists: LCD Soundsystem, My Morning Jacket, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Gnarls Barkley, Devendra Banhart, Diplo, Federico Aubele, Matthew Dear, Mum, Neon Neon, RJD2, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kinds, and several others. We encourage everyone to pick up a copy and help support these worthy organizations: http://www.waxploitation.com/buycauses.

The band performs twice - on television and online - towards the end of this week. The Decemberists perform "The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid" on The Tonight Show THIS Thursday night at 11:35 pm / 10:35 pm ct. Then the band arises at dawn to visit KCRW, where they'll perform a short set on the morning show, Morning Becomes Eclectic. If you don't live in the L.A. area, you can hear the set streamed online at http://kcrw.com at 11:15 am Pacific time this Friday, May 15.

See you soon! Check out full tour date information at http://decemberists.com/tour.aspx.

To see complete dates for The "A Short Fazed Hovel" Tour 2009, see http://www.decemberists.com/tour.aspx. More dates to follow in the coming weeks.

The Decemberists are thrilled to announce Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 as support for the following shows: NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, and Columbia. The Venus 3 includes Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin, or as Robyn puts it, "3/4ths of the Minus 5 and half of R.E.M." The Heartless Bastards will be playing a handful of shows with us in August.

It's common knowledge that the Decemberists' arch-nemesis, a certain Stephen Colbert, robbed guitarist Chris Funk of his rightful mantle of "Shreddiest in the West" during the much-touted Guitarmageddon of 2006. On April 27th, The Decemberists will be returning to Mr. Colbert's cable television program to redeem themselves. Or at least to have a pleasant interview with the host and play a song from their new LP, The Hazards of Love. It remains to be said whether or not Colin Meloy will command his legion twitter followers (125,000 and growing) against Mr Colbert's relatively weaker armada (a mere 75K or so) in a earth-scorching battle-to-end-all-battles. Pick your side and enlist by following either twitter.com/colinmeloy or twitter.com/stephenathome.

Speaking of things online, The Decemberists have, with the release of The Hazards of Love, broken the proverbial champagne bottle over their brand new Online Download Store. Why buy our records from here rather than through other online outlets? Easy: you can support the band directly this way, you can bundle your purchase with a t-shirt, and you can choose to buy the download as a 320 kbps mp3 or as a FLAC lossless file -- they're better quality files than you'll find anywhere else. Check it out at: http://www.decemberistsshop.com/downloads.html. For those of you who still choose to consume music in a format that you can rest your coffee cup on, buy CDs and vinyl at http://www.decemberistsshop.com/zencart/.

The Decemberists' D-Luxe Message Board, the be-all-end-all place to discuss Decemberists related esoterica, has moved to a server that will better accommodate the fiery dialogues that go on there. Join the fray at http://orate.decemberists.com.

That's it!

Yours,
The Decemberists

• Record signing at Music Millennium in Portland tonight!
• Two shows at Edgefield Amphitheater in Troutdale, Oregon -- on sale now!
• Colin sings on the new Robyn Hitchcock record!

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

As tow-headed, flower-garlanded Persephone ducks a peek out of Hades, casually popping a white earbud from a freckled ear and listening for the sounds of Spring, we Decemberists are incredibly pleased to present to you our new LP, The Hazards of Love, which is available in discriminating record stores and digital outlets everywhere RIGHT NOW. And while the Decemberists support listening to the record at your own speed, on your own time, it's no secret that the lyric booklet is a helpful guide to the world laid out in The Hazards of Love. Download a PDF of the booklet at http://www.decemberists.com/downloads.aspx and dig in!

For those of you who are still keen on owning something tangible, the Decemberists will be on hand in person to sign vinyl or CD copies of the record at the Music Millennium in SE Portland (http://www.buymusichere.net/stores/musicmillennium/) tonight (3/24) from 6 to 8 pm pst.

Speaking of our lovely, gray Portland: we Decemberists will be playing two shows with the inimitable Andrew Bird and the able-bodied Blind Pilot at the Edgefield Amphitheater in Troutdale, OR. Tickets are on sale now at http://www.ticketmaster.com/venue/123048/

And: check out the new release by Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, Goodnight Oslo: http://www.yeproc.com/news.php?articleId=5847 A tacit agreement was made between Colin and Robyn: that Robyn would agree to play on The Hazards of Love and Colin would, in return, live out his life-long dream and sing on a Robyn Hitchcock record. Colin says, "As a life-long (or at least since I was 12) fan of Robyn, I have to say that Goodnight Oslo ranks with the best of Robyn's records."

The Decemberists

 Point of Order:
. NPR broadcast of the Decemberists' SXSW show tonight!
. The Hazards of Love available now on iTunes!
. Pre-sale for Edgefield shows ends FRIDAY

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

Another brilliant sun rises on the stucco'd pavilions of Austin, TX; another swarm of robot armadillos flies from their unseen cubbies to wash the streets clean of the beer, vomit and soggy discarded halter tops. O, SXSW.

So let us politely remind you that NPR will be broadcasting The Decemberists' performance in Austin tonight as they play their new record The Hazards of Love in its entirety. Check it out at 12 midnight (central time) at http://www.npr.org/music/sxsw/.

The Hazards of Love is also available NOW on iTunes worldwide as a special pre-release: http://www.itunes.com/thedecemberists/thehazardsoflove. It is also available in deluxe 180 gram vinyl in select indie stores. Hooray! The record will be available everywhere on CD, vinyl and all digital formats on March 24th.

And for those of you in the Portland area currently being drubbed with sheets of dull gray rain, remember that Summer will eventually arrive. Proof: the pre-sale for tickets to our two shows July 18 and 19 at the Edgefield Amphitheater (with very special guests Andrew Bird and Blind Pilot) in scenic Troutdale, OR is currently on at http://decemberists.tickets.musictoday.com -- but ends just before the public onsale this Saturday at 10 am (when they'll be on sale at http://www.ticketmaster.com/.)  Full show information can be found on the Decemberists web site.

And that's it for now!

Yours,
The Decemberists
