The Decemberists to Appear on Parks and Recreation this Thursday

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

First off, Black Prairie‘s new album, Fortune, is now available in their shop, on iTunes, and all the other places you might expect. You can watch their new music video for “Let It Out” here and they’ll be making the rounds of the West Coast in the coming weeks if you’d like to see them live. Join them on their Facebook and Twitter pages to keep up to date.

If you somehow needed another reason to tune in, we’ll be appearing on the Parks and Recreation season finale this Thursday night, April 24th, at 8/7c on NBC. The Pawnee-Eagleton Unity Concert line-up includes Land Ho! (Jeff Tweedy), Bobby Knight Ranger (Yo La Tengo), Mouse Rat, Ginuwine, Letters to Cleo, and The Decemberists.

After the warm-up gig in Pawnee, we’ll be performing at Boston Calling Music Festival on May 24th, our only festival appearance of the year. Tickets are still available here.

A small amount of tickets have just been released for both of our “V for Victory” benefit shows in Portland on May 29-30 at the Crystal Ballroom.  May 29 with Laura Veirs | May 30 with Sallie Ford

As a quick reminder, we’ll perform Castaways and Cutouts in its entirety along with a second set of favorites with all proceeds going to support Victory Academy, Oregon’s only full-time accredited school for kids on the autism spectrum.

If you can’t make it out to the shows but would like to support the cause, Victory Academy is auctioning off some great pieces by children’s book illustrators, including a few from our own Decemberists Illustratrix, Carson Ellis. The auctions run through April 29th here.

Yours,
The Decemberists

“V is for Victory” Benefit Concert in Portland on May 30th

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

Oh MLR, we have such news to give you. We know we’ve been cluttering your inbox here and there with, alternately, the comings and the goings of various members of the Decemberists during their time in Hiatus Mode™, but we have a particularly juicy tidbit to impart today.

The band is emerging, jerboa-like, from their time in hibernation.

And this is no ordinary band-reemergence. No: the band is kicking off their time out of suspended animation with a gala concert event entitled “V is for Victory,” a benefit show for Victory Academy, Oregon’s only full-time accredited school for kids on the autism spectrum. It’s to be held on May 30th at the Crystal Ballroom in sunny Portland, Oregon. Sallie Ford is opening. And in an effort to reacclimatize themselves to the new atmosphere of the outside world, they’ll be communing with their younger selves by playing Castaways and Cutouts, their seminal 2002 long-player debut, in its entirety. You heard that right, folks. They’ll even be playing “Cocoon.” We have it on good authority that they, as of press time, do not even remember how to play “Cocoon.” Of course, they’ll be playing a second sets of sentimental favorites as well. No one is expected to leave unsatisfied.

Tickets for “V is for Victory” will go on sale this Friday, March 7th, at noon PST, more info at crystalballroompdx.com. VIP tickets will also be available, which include early entrance to the show, a pre-show reception with the band (with light food and drink served), and a special limited-edition poster signed by the band.

Colin had this to say about the event and its beneficiary: “Victory Academy is an important place, a positive educational environment for kids on the autism spectrum. In a public school system that is constantly failing its most vulnerable charges, we need more and better schools catering to the needs of autistic children. Victory is such a place. The Decemberists are proud and excited to do their part in raising money for their capital campaign to build a new school building.” To learn more about the cause, please visit here.

Colin Performs on “Inside Llewyn Davis” Concert Film, Holiday Sale

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

While the temperature of our cryogenic chamber is starting to heat back up, we have some more Decemberists-adjacent updates to bring your way:

Tune in to Showtime tomorrow night, December 13th, at 10pm for the premiere of Another Day / Another Time: Celebrating the Music of “Inside Llewyn Davis,” which features performances by Colin and a slew of fantastic artists. The concert, inspired by the Coen Brothers’ film, was recorded at Town Hall in NYC back in September; you can watch a trailer here.

Colin’s West Coast solo dates are quickly approaching. As a reminder, his January run consists of stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.

Keep an eye out at the merch table for Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks.  Like the preceding Colin Meloy Sings… entries (Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke), the EP is available exclusively on the solo tour. However, for the sake of partial inclusiveness, NPR has a pair of the tracks streaming: “Do You Remember Walter?” and “Days.”

It’s time for another holiday sale! Get 20% off all apparel, select music, posters, and odds and ends in The Decemberists Shop through the end of the year. The Black Prairie Store is also getting in on the spirit with 15% off storewide.

While you’re in an online shopping headspace, Wildwood Imperium, the third book in Colin’s Wildwood Chronicles series, will be released in February and pre-orders are currently available. Visit here for details.

Black Prairie just wrapped up a stint in the studio recording their third LP, which will be released this spring. Stay tuned to their Facebook/Twitter or get in on their mailing list for those details as they pop up. You may get a chance to hear a sneak peak of their new album at the band’s three Pacific Northwest shows in February opening up for Amos Lee.

Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks

As you may know, Colin will be hitting the road in November and January for his first solo tour in five years and he has recorded a new cover EP to bring along with him. Through a process involving public polling, meditative introspection and a completely random lottery, the subject for this tour’s EP has been determined: The Kinks.

Like the preceding Colin Meloy Sings… entries (Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke), Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks will be available exclusively on the solo tour but for those who can’t make it out to see him, NPR is currently streaming Colin’s version of “Do You Remember Walter?” from The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society here. We’ll include the track list for the EP below and make sure to visit ColinMeloy.com to see the full list of tour dates.

Colin Meloy Solo Tour in November

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

Pause a while, here, gentle traveler of the internet. We here at Decemberists HQ have an item of fairly serious consequence to impart.

Colin Meloy, singer and songwriter for the band, is embarking on A SOLO TOUR. It’ll be his first in FIVE YEARS, folks.

The tour will bring him to many far-flung environs, from the eastern seaboard to slightly inland and just south a bit. It will vault him across the wide prairies of our great country’s midsection. It will eventually lead him to the Pacific coast, but we’re not quite ready to announce that part yet.

No doubt he’ll be bringing in tow a slew of songs, new and old, familiar and not so familiar. Songs you’re dying to witness live; songs you’d sort of forgotten about and to which you’re not exactly opposed to listening. Also in tow? A brand new Colin Meloy Sings… cover EP, which he’s been doing since forever, or at least since he started doing these solo tours. He’s paid tribute to Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke in the past; what will it be this time? Who knows? Does he even know? Possibly not.

But you want dates, don’t you. Well, look no further:

Anywho: come say hello! Sing along! It’s going to be a cozy campfire-like time. Bring your own skewers.
